Biography

Season 3 Episode 67: Nostradamus: Prophet of Doom

Nostradamus (born Michel de Nostredame) was a prominent French astrologer, physician, and reputed seer of the Renaissance. Educated in medicine at the University of Montpellier, he initially gained acclaim for treating plague victims across southern France. However, he is best remembered for his 1555 book Les Prophéties, a collection of 942 poetic quatrains. Written in a cryptic blend of French, Greek, Latin, and Italian, these verses were intended to predict future global disasters, wars, and cosmic events. His cryptic style attracted royal patronage, notably from French Queen Catherine de' Medici, who appointed him Counselor and Physician-in-Ordinary to King Charles IX. Though modern skeptics view his writings as vague metaphors easily reinterpreted after historical events occur, popular culture frequently credits him with predicting the Great Fire of London, the rise of Adolf Hitler, and the 9/11 attacks.
