Biography
Season 3 Episode 81: Yitzhak Rabin: Soldier of Peace
Yitzhak Rabin was an Israeli politician, statesman, and general who twice served as Prime Minister of Israel (1974–1977 and 1992–1995). Rabin began his career in the Haganah and later rose to become Chief of Staff of the Israel Defense Forces, leading Israel to victory in the 1967 Six-Day War. Transitioning to politics, he joined the Labor Party and was appointed Prime Minister in 1974, steering the nation through post-Yom Kippur War economic recovery. During his second term, Rabin shifted from a military hawk to a champion for peace. He signed the historic Oslo Accords in 1993 alongside PLO Chairman Yasser Arafat, establishing a framework for Palestinian self-governance. For these efforts, Rabin, Arafat, and Shimon Peres were awarded the 1994 Nobel Peace Prize. On November 4, 1995, following a mass peace rally in Tel Aviv, Rabin was assassinated by Yigal Amir, a right-wing Jewish extremist opposed to the peace process.
