The residents go to court to watch the proceedings. Emily pleads guilty. The Magistrate sympathises with her and fines her £5. He threatens to send Swindley to prison for a month but only fines him £20. The newspaper carries the report: "Magistrate Attacks Local Preacher". Val goes into labour.
