"You've got two or three minutes to phone a desk and get an order," explains picture editor Nick Bowman. Doorstepping the bereaved, dogging celebrities believed to be "playing away from home", poking their telephoto lenses through the shrubs, the job demands a ruthless streak. And if it comes down to trying to do a deal with a rival, then as head of news Christine Challand says, "you hope there's a bit of honour among thieves".
